Replace CARTO basemaps with OpenFreeMap vector tiles - #53
Merged
Conversation
CARTO now watermarks anonymous basemap tiles with "API KEY REQUIRED", while still answering 200 with a valid PNG, so nothing on our side could detect it. OpenFreeMap needs no key, no registration, and can be self-hosted, which a distributed plugin can rely on. The positron style keeps the grey background light_all provided, so the Galette markers stay readable. Vector tiles mean maplibre-gl, bridged into Leaflet by maplibre-gl-leaflet: the markers, clusters, popups and controls all stay where they are. maplibre-gl is pinned to 5.x because 6.x dropped the UMD build, and it gets its own bundle because uglify-js cannot parse its already minified dist. Attribution is no longer hardcoded: the bridge reads it from the source TileJSON and feeds the Leaflet control. Browsers without WebGL 2 fall back to raster OpenStreetMap tiles rather than to a blank map.
Issue will be fixed in next version; but current users will have issues. Here a quickfix for them!
